Terms & Conditions

Educational groups eligible for free entry

English Heritage offers free education visits at English Heritage sites to a wide range of learners. To qualify the visit must (a) be booked at least 7 days in advance, (b) include clearly defined learning objectives, planned and structured learning activities and (c) be led by the group leader. Bookings for Discovery Visits must be made at least 14 days in advance. All bookings are subject to availability. The following learning groups are entitled to free entry at all English Heritage sites:

  • Formal education groups including schools, colleges of further and higher education and universities, including overseas formal education groups;
  • Lifelong learner groups including the Workers’ Educational Association, University of the Third Age and local authority classes;
  • Organised youth education groups including Scouts, Cubs, Guides, Brownies and similar youth groups such as the Young Archaeologists’ Club;
  • Groups of children, youths or adults with special learning needs or disabilities, gifted and talented children, mentoring services attached to a formal learning organisation (please let us know of any specific needs or ways that we could make your visit more effective when booking);
  • Home educators who are members of an umbrella group and other home educator groups at our discretion; and
  • National Trust Learning Group members.

Groups not eligible for free entry

Any groups that arrange visits through a commercial operator or do not meet the criteria outlined above will not be eligible for free entry, including but not limited to:

  • Tour and coach operators;
  • Organisers of study holidays or summer schools arranged on a commercial basis between educational organisations, universities and holiday organisations;
  • Third parties who profit from organising visits for education groups;
  • Organisations bringing groups of adults on leisure visits, such as Women’s Institutes, local amenity groups and student societies;
  • Groups wishing to use outside providers such as tour guides, artists and theatre groups;
  • English as a Foreign Language (EFL) groups and language schools;
  • Child-minding services and holiday clubs and camps;

Groups of 11 or more visitors who are paying together but do not qualify for a free educational visits are eligible for a 15% discount on entry (10% at Stonehenge) - English Heritage members, coach drivers and tour guides do not count towards the group total. Each coach is entitled to free entry for one tour guide and the coach driver. Group bookings information can be found on: Click here.

The free education visits entry scheme does not cover entry on bank holiday weekends, public holidays or to additional fee paying public events at English Heritage sites.

Group leader responsibilities

  • You must book any standard free educational visit at least 7 days in advance and book 14 days in advance for Discovery Visits.
  • Bookings must contain the contact details of the person who will be leading the group on the day of the visit. We are not able to accept bookings from commercial tour operators, language schools or similar groups booking on behalf of schools.
  • It is the responsibility of all group leaders to complete the risk assessment for their group, Free planning visits once bookings are confirmed and online Hazard Information Sheets and Organiser Packs are available to assist with this requirement.
  • It is recommended that the group leader undertake a free pre-planning visit to familiarise themselves with site.
  • Have clear learning objectives related to the site being visited and planned learning activities for the visit.
  • Please arrive on time. Contact the Education Bookings Team on 0370 333 0606 or email bookeducation@english-heritage.org.uk if you need to change the time of arrival, cancel the visit or if you are unavoidably delayed. In the case of a delayed arrival you can also contact the site directly; you will find their number at the top of your Visit Permit.
  • The education visit permit must be presented upon arrival at the site
  • You must take full responsibility for the behaviour and welfare of the group for the duration of the visit. All signage and safety warnings on the property must be obeyed, site staff should be treated with respect and any requests they make acted upon appropriately.
  • Groups must have adequate adult supervision on site at all times. Some sites have additional supervision ratios and/or capacity limitations within certain buildings and areas around the site; these will be outlined in your booking information and must be adhered to at all times. This is to ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines and for the enjoyment of all visitors to our sites. Please inform the Education Bookings Team at least a week prior to your visit if you intend to bring more adults than you originally booked for. If you do not, any additional adults may be required to pay the entrance fee.
  • You must meet the following ratios of leaders to learners:
    Year 2 and under......................................................1 leader for every 6 students (1:6)
    Years 3 to 5..................................................................1 leader for every 8 students (1:8)
    Years 6 and over (up to the age of 18)...1 leader for every 15 students (1:15)
    For an adult learning group, there are no ratios but there must be an appointed group leader.

Cancellations

In the event of severe weather conditions it is possible that sites may have to close at short notice for public safety; please contact the site or check the English Heritage website before travelling.

If you need to cancel your visit, please contact the Education Bookings Team on 0370 333 0606 or email bookeducation@english-heritage.org.uk. Full costs will be charged for Discovery Visits if cancelled less than two weeks before the intended visit.

  • By booking a free educational visit you agree to accept these terms and conditions of entry.
  • You may be asked to supply proof of status and details of the organisation you belong to or the educational work planned on site.
  • If we believe for any reason that a booking has been made in breach of these terms and conditions we reserve the right in our absolute discretion to refuse free admittance and charge the standard full entry price.
  • These terms and conditions and all disputes or claims arising out of or in connection with the same shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the law of England.

In the Footsteps of Kings£100.00Find out why Portchester was built, and how it was defended, the hierarchy of a medieval castle and how kings enjoyed themselves! A Wroxeter Experience£200.00A guided session with a costumed interpreter to explore the remains of Viriconium and how the site was used by the people who lived there. The interactive tour takes in the museum, remains of the Roman baths and the replica Roman townhouse. There is also an activity for each child to make a replica Roman coin from clay to take home.

Please note that we are only able to accommodate 1 x A Wroxeter Experience or 2 x Romans at Wroxeter Discovery Visits per day.

Face to Face£100.00In this workshop, students learn about the purpose, form and content of portraits and self-portraits as well as the powerful use of symbolism.

Students dress up in costumes to recreate a painting, look at the work of Rembrandt, Reynolds and other renowned masters and analyse the techniques used by artists to show character and tell a story, before using what they’ve learnt to create their own self-portraits.

They pretend to be servants, looking at the scale of the house and the symbols in the decoration, before going ‘below stairs’ to get hands-on with the day-to-day activities in Kenwood’s Old Kitchen, experiencing how much work it would have been to run a country house.

Meet a Roman Soldier£125.00Discover what life was like for a Roman soldier stationed at Housesteads and meet Roman Veteran Rufus Aelius Victor. Murder at the Fort£100.00Become history detectives and solve a Roman murder mystery! Two skeletons have been found buried at the fort and you must explore the possible murder suspects. Try to piece together the clues, in the process learning about life in the Roman fort, developing discussion skills and judgements based on evidence.

Medieval Siege Experience£200.00Extend the Medieval Castle Quest Discovery Visit so your class can enjoy an additional session of expert-led activities: inspect the castle defences, get hands-on with replica clothing worn by medieval soldiers, including helmets, armour and surcoats, and consider the roles individuals had during a castle siege.

This extended Discovery Visit is great value for a class of up to 30 students to learn from our experts for a full day.

Medieval Castle Quest£100.00Investigate Kenilworth Castle’s medieval architecture and learn about the history of attack and defence at medieval Kenilworth. Monks, Monasteries and Medieval Life£100.00Discover why Whitby Abbey was founded here and how it has changed through time. On an interactive expert-led tour, your class will investigate evidence of the Anglo-Saxon monastery, learn about what archaeological techniques can tell us about the past, and explore what life was like in the later Benedictine monastery, imagining what it was like to be a monk.

1066 GCSE Tour£100.00Take part in an expert-led tour of the 1066 Battlefield. Students will consider the events, tactics and consequences of the Battle of Hastings from both sides, using carvings and landscape to put this into context.

Lullingstone: Roman Life and Learning£100.00Interpret artefacts discovered at Lullingstone through interactive archaeology activities. Through role play and historical enquiry, learners will understand key features of the villa to increase understanding of Roman life in Britain.

GCSE Tour AQA£100.00This expert-led tour of Kenilworth Castle is designed to support GCSE groups learning about Elizabethan England, particularly the AQA exam module ‘Elizabethan England, c1568-1603’. Through engaging discussion and activity, students will explore key aspects of Elizabeth I’s reign, as well as the location, function, structure and design of Kenilworth Castle. Later tour times available during the summer term, please enquire for more details.

GCSE Tour OCR£100.00Developed to support your study of the historic environment for GCSE History, this castle tour meets aspects of the requirements for OCR History A or B. Explore the architecture and discover what different parts of the site reveal about changing needs and attitudes from the 12th to the 16th century.

Water, Wells and Donkeys£100.00Through role play, mini games and sensory exploration, your class will travel back into the past to explore how the community at Carisbrooke Castle survived during a siege and how the treadwheel in the well house was powered. They will also discover the role of the donkeys at the castle, both in the past and today. By the end of the session, you will see the treadwheel in action, create a working wheel-operated model and meet and greet one of our resident donkeys. This session is particularly suitable for SEND groups so please let us know your requirements when making your booking.

Prepare for a Feast£100.00You’re invited to a banquet for Henry VIII! Through costume and role play, pupils will discover the people who lived and worked at Gainsborough Old Hall. Explore the kitchen and take part in hands-on activities to prepare a feast fit for the king. Enter the Great Hall and learn about Tudor etiquette – remember not to pick your teeth or make rude noises! Take on the role of the guards to keep the king safe, as well as jesters and musicians to entertain him, and let your pupils experience a Tudor household and Henry VIII’s court.

The Queen is Coming!£100.00Please note: This session was previously named Waiting on Hand and Foot. Enter the world of the downstairs brigade in this stunning, fully-equipped historic setting and discover what life was like for the servants at Osborne House in the 1870s. Queen Victoria’s Housekeeper Mrs Smith talks about domestic life below-stairs and introduces hands-on role-play activities. Learn to set the table, black boots, clean the brasses and beat the rugs in preparation for the arrival of Queen Victoria. Will they receive Royal approval for their work?

GCSE Tour£80.00GCSE Castle Acre Priory Tour KS4 Duration: 1 hour An expert-led interactive tour of the priory aligned to support AQA History GCSE students studying the historic environment of Norman England. Students will immerse themselves within the priory, by listening to Gregorian music in the church, unpicking symbols from the West Front and trying their hand at sign language in the Refectory. The Story of Prisoners Portchester Learn about the political and historical importance of Portchester Castle through the lives and plays of the French Prisoners of War who were imprisoned there in 1810. By examining the physical structure of the castle, using source materials and getting involved with practical activities, students will better understand how prisoners came to be held at the castle, what life was like there and immerse themselves in their story at the place it happened. They’ll discover why the theatre was created in the keep, learn about melodrama and Roseliska, the play written by the prisoners. They will even be put through their acting paces!

This Discovery Visit is applicable to OCR GCSE Spec B History Around Us and covers multiple criteria including the international significance of the castle and the reasons for the location of the site within its surroundings

Prisoners at Portchester Discover the unique local history story of the French Prisoners of War who were held at Portchester Castle. Pupils will retrace the prisoner’s route as they make their way alongside the castle walls and through the Watergate to view the castle for the first time. They will see through the eyes of the prisoners and imagine the sights, smells and sounds of the castle as they consider how it would feel to be imprisoned there. Pupils will learn why the prisoners were allowed to build a theatre how they entertained themselves, why they created their own theatre, and how their plays and performances connected them to the local community. Our brand-new, expert-led, interactive Discovery Visit, featuring an exclusive tour of the recently restored house and gardens, will bring the fascinating story of Marble Hill to life Key Stage 1 (5-7 yrs), Key Stage 2 (8-11 yrs)
Society, Science & Civil War In this Discovery Visit students tour Bolsover Castle, stopping at key locations to explore, interact and experiment. They experience the sights, smells, sounds and tastes of a 17th century party in the room where William Cavendish and his first wife, Elizabeth, put on an extravagant entertainment for the King and Queen. Students also try an experiment of the kind performed for William’s second wife, Margaret, when she attended a Royal Society meeting, the first women ever to do so. The tour is also interspersed with source analysis using portraits, poetry and shopping receipts to enable students to delve deeper into the story of the castle and its fascinating inhabitants.

Operation DynamoFREEIn May 1940 the greatest rescue of all time took place, masterminded right here deep within Dover's secret wartime tunnels. See, hear and feel the danger as the events and people from the Dunkirk evacuation are made real. Journey through the tunnels deep beneath the castle as special effects, projections and real film footage bring this dramatic rescue operation to life.

Underground HospitalFREEExperience the sights, sounds and smells of this authentic underground hospital. Follow the dramatic journey of a wounded WWII pilot, fighting for his life as he is rushed through to the operating theatre. See the living conditions in the tunnels and hear about the difficulties of treating injuries in such close proximity to falling enemy bombs.

Heritage Trail Tally stick trail – Will your pupils turn out to be servants or nobles? Children can collect a tally stick from the shop and use them to answer questions, find out information or perform an action, at trail points located around the site. During the course of this, they will find out if their tally stick makes them a servant, doing all the work or a noble – living a life of luxury. Please note: tally sticks must be returned at the end of your visit

Who is Coming?

English Heritage Education required ratios:

  • Years 1 and 2 (Ages 5 to 7), one leader for every six students (1:6)

  • Your booking is not confirmed until you receive a confirmation email and booking permit from us. Booking requests made less than 14 days in advance regretfully will not be accepted.
